The lower Deschutes River sits at the bottom of a deep basalt canyon cut by the river itself.  The surrounding area is a high, semi-arid desert dotted with juniper.  Maupin, which is located in the rain shadow of Mt. Hood, receives only 12 inches of rain a year.  Down in the canyon there are pockets of oaks and sumac.  One particular location, called Cedar Island, is the only place on the lower Deschutes that has Cedar trees growing.  Fauna in the canyon is just as varied  including Osprey, migratory waterfowl, upland birds such as chukar, various song-birds, mule deer, big horn sheep and elk to name a few.  In the river itself there is a world renowned strain of rainbow trout, the Deschutes Redside, known for their bright coloration and exceptional strength.  Also world famous are the Deschutes Steelhead who arrive in early summer and can be pursued into late fall.  Aside from these famous game fish there are also Chinook salmon, whitefish, pacific lamprey and even the occasional bull trout.  The river itself is worth a visit for its beautiful scenery and its rapids.  The lower Deschutes has many well known rapids, such as boxcar or oaksprings, enjoyed by hundreds of rafters in the warm summer months.

Each year, thousands of people come to the lower Deschutes River (not all at the same time thankfully) seeking adventure, beautiful scenery and the rejuvenating peace of being away from the daily bustle.  The Deschutes is most famous for a few particular types of recreation.  White water rafting and Kayaking is a big deal on the Deschutes.  Hundreds of people of all skill levels come to enjoy the excitement of the rapids and the scenery of the canyon in between runs.  Also world famous on the Deschutes is fishing, particularly fly fishing for the Deschutes Redside trout and summer run Steelhead.   On top of these well known recreational opportunities, the lower Deschutes and its surrounding area offer other fantastic types of recreation that until recently were known mostly to area residents.  Opportunities include some more traditionally thought of activities such as upland bird and big game hunting.  However, the area also has superb opportunities for bird watching, hiking, geology and cycling.  Especially in recent years, cycling has been growing in the area.  Aside from the many beautiful miles of paved road along the river there are hundreds of miles of road going over varied terrain and through different landscapes.  For the ultra-cyclists, Maupin is only 45 miles to Mt.
